Title: Biology Meets Math: Building a Model of Primary Visual Cortex
Abstract:
In this talk, I would like to use some recent modeling work to illustrate the interaction between mathematics and biology in computational neuroscience. The model in question is a small piece of the primary visual cortex (V1) of the Macaque monkey, whose visual system is very similar to that of humans. Our model is a high dimensional dynamical system capable of reproducing dozens of V1 function and is (to a degree) built to “compute like the real brain”. I will showcase in this talk a few selected items, e.g. gamma rhythms, orientation selectivity (related to the detection of edges), and direction selectivity (a visual capability implicated in pursuit eye movements). Underlying dynamical mechanisms will be proposed.
About the NITMB Seminar Series:
The NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology Seminar Series brings together a mix of mathematicians and biologists to foster discussion and collaboration between the two fields. The seminar series typically takes place on Fridays from 10am – 11am at NITMB. Talks are in-person with the ability to join remotely. Learn more at https://www.nitmb.org/nitmb-seminar-series
