NITMB Workshops

Overview

The NITMB supports a regular series of scientific workshops at the interface of Mathematics and Biology. These workshops are organized by members of the scientific community and hosted at the NITMB, with guidance and logistical support from NITMB leadership and staff. Typical workshops are 3-5 days long and engage 50-75 participants, representing a broad range of disciplines and career stages.

The goal of NITMB workshops is to open new scientific directions while fostering a vibrant intellectual community at the interface of mathematics and biology by:

  • Identifying open questions and research challenges that could be advanced by the interplay of theory and experiment

  • Stimulating new mathematics, or new applications of existing mathematics, to address these challenges

  • Building shared language and conceptual frameworks that support collaborative efforts; and

  • Fostering the development of interdisciplinary scientists working across the mathematics-biology interface.

Format

While formats vary, NITMB workshops typically include relatively few formal talks, leaving ample time for open discussion, brainstorming, cross-fertilization, and initiation of new collaborative projects. Successful workshops are designed to channel collective effort towards specific scientific outcomes. Early sessions should focus on building common ground, establishing a common language, and articulating key challenges. Later sessions should focus on consolidating ideas, summarizing emerging opportunities,and articulating plans for future research activities and collaborations.
