NITMB Affiliate Membership

NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB) Affiliate Members are tenure-track faculty from institutions external to Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, or professional scientists with a PhD and permanent appointments employed at organizations, institutes, and/or companies, who want to become regular and active participants in NITMB research, convening programs, and training. The Leadership Council reviews applications annually.

The next application deadline for Affiliate Membership is September 1st, 2026

Benefits of NITMB Affiliate Membership

  • Inclusion on our webpage and in other publications and reports

  • Opportunity to participate in the NITMB community, including convening programs, seminars, and to engage deeply with NITMB scholars

  • Opportunity to help shape programs, including workshops and seminars

  • Access to NITMB in the John Hancock Center in downtown Chicago

  • Receives priority review of application to workshops and other activities

  • Receives a modest travel budget for travel to and from NITMB
    (for non-local participants more than 50 miles from NITMB)

Responsibilities

  • Should attend an NITMB activity or visit at least once every 12 months

  • Engage in cross-disciplinary research at the interface between theory/math/computation and experimental/empirical biology

  • Acknowledge NITMB funding support, if appropriate, on a research product that has been impacted by NITMB participation:     

    • “[Author] acknowledges support from the National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology through the National Science Foundation (grant number DMS-2235451) and the Simons Foundation (grant number MP-TMPS-00005320).”

  • Support NITMB activities outside of research. Examples might include:

    • Helping to organize a workshop

    • Serving on an NITMB committee (e.g., reviewing)

    • Assisting with a training activity or helping plan a series of tutorials

    • Participating in outreach or education activities

    • Helping to guide or speak at the NITMB Seminar Series

  • Respond to requests for annual reporting of NITMB activities as part of annual membership review

Becoming an Affiliate Member

  • Submit a CV and a statement describing your interests in and fit for NITMB

  • Applicants should:

    • Be a tenure-track faculty member of a college, university, or academic institution, or a professional scientist with a PhD and a permanent appointment employed at an organization, institute, and/or company with goals overlapping NITMB’s

    • Have interest in cross-disciplinary research at the interface between theory/math/computation and experimental/empirical biology

    • Focus, in whole or in part, on basic research (NITMB does not support human health/clinical applications or applied engineering)

Membership Renewal

Membership renewals will be based on the criteria outlined above.  An annual survey will query members about any of the following that are relevant, asking for: 

  1. A report on participation in any NITMB events or visits during the past year

  2. A description of NITMB-related research projects

  3. A listing of publications in which NITMB has been acknowledged

  4. A catalog of engagement in any NITMB activities outside of research

Deadline

New applications and renewal requests are due September 1st each year
